A very Maple Christmas

Christmas Day, my boyfriend and I will celebrate five years together. I am not single for the holidays, but this time of year is sacred because I do live apart from him for about half of every year. The days surrounding December 25 are a sweet spot when no one is unpacking after months at sea, or packing up to return to it. We hit a kind of stride I imagine some couples who live together year-round might slip into.

With our cat, Maple, things are different. She’s stuck with me almost every day of the year except for Christmas, when my partner and I leave her at home to celebrate with her other hooman friends and a mound of catnip.
